Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail

Athens County does not run its own jail. Instead, it shares the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail with Hocking, Morgan, Perry, and Vinton Counties. The facility opened in April 1998 and can hold up to 226 inmates. It sits at 16677 Riverside Drive, Nelsonville, OH 45764. You can reach the jail by phone at 740-753-4060 or by fax at 740-753-2644.

Scott Springhetti serves as the Executive Jail Director. Luke Mckee is the Assistant Jail Director. The jail is run by the judges, sheriffs, and county commissioners from all five counties. That shared setup means booking release data for Athens County inmates may also appear alongside records from the other four counties in the system.

Anyone booked into the regional jail on charges out of Athens County will show up on the jail's public roster. The roster is updated as new bookings and releases happen.

Booking Releases and Public Records

Ohio law treats booking releases as public records. Under ORC 149.43, any person can ask for and receive copies of booking release data. You do not need to say who you are or explain your reason. The sheriff's office must give you the records in a fair amount of time during regular business hours.

County jails in Ohio must keep a jail register under Chapter 341 of the Ohio Revised Code. That register includes each prisoner's name, the date they were booked, the cause of their commitment, and the date and way they were let go. This is the legal backbone of the booking release process in Athens County.

For state-level inmate records, ORC 5120.21 allows disclosure of an inmate's name, criminal convictions, photograph, supervision status, and disciplinary history. So even if someone is moved from the regional jail to a state prison, some of their record stays public.
